September 11, 2001 was very personal to me. I didn’t know anyone that died at the World Trade Center, and I didn’t know anyone that worked ground zero. But I felt personally attacked. I was angry and I wanted to take the fight to the enemy, leading to an overwhelming sense of duty. The United States was being persecuted simply because we believed in liberty and self determination.
So you could say that 9/11 derailed my entire life. It literally changed everything. It gave me a purpose that I lacked. No longer would I go to college for Information Technology or attend a police academy. But it wasn’t completely altruism. I needed money for college, and I needed time to decide what to do with my life. The military seemed like the perfect fit.
And yes, I was scared. I knew I would be going to war. I knew there was a chance I could be killed. But I was convinced the miltary was the right move.
